About me:
PERSONAL STATEMENT:
I hold a degree (B.A.) and a four-year teaching diploma (H.D.E). My degree majors are Education, English, Criminology and Geography. My specialisation field at teacher's training college was Art and Remedial Education. English, Afrikaans, Remedial Education and Geography were my major H.D.E. subjects. I have taught in Special Education for 3 years, teaching English to minimal brain dysfunctional and specifically learning disabled children. I spent 10 years in Botswana, initially setting up the Remedial Mathematics department, then teaching I.G.C.S.E. English, Geography, Development Studies, Afrikaans and Art, Form 1 - 5. I have taught Reception, Year 2 / 3, Key Stage 1 and run multiple Learning Support Centres. I have been the admissions officer and public relations officer for WIS. I am currently Head of Department for Language Arts - teaching IB A1 English and ToK (International Baccalaurate Organisation’s diploma programme).
My most successful accomplishment is motherhood! I have two wonderful boys and a little girl, aged 13, and the boys are 20 years and 18 years respectively. My teaching style has changed dramatically since I have had my own children. I have been married to Kenneth for twenty-three fantastic years.
PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION:
I have had the privilege of teaching in diverse areas, from mainstream Reception to Form 6, in a Special Education School as well as Special Needs Classes. I would have to say that it is my experience as a teacher that has shaped my philosophy. I believe that each child has potential to learn and grow as an individual. How effective the child's learning is, depends upon the learning environment and the nurturing to which they are exposed. Each child is a unique individual whom needs to be educated as a whole being. Every facet of their lives must be nurtured, emotionally, intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually, children are unique.
I am always on the lookout for "sparkling moments" because children are full of creativity, adventure, spontaneity and good cheer. Each child has a "something special" that enhances whatever setting in which they are placed. So I strive to express a caring heart towards all children, of all ages, nationalities, creeds and social positions.
I love teaching; for me it is a calling not a job!
TEACHING METHODS:
I enjoy seeing children learn through active involvement, investigation and discovery I focus on developing critical thinkers. This is my primary teaching strategy, to create an environment, which encourages enquiring minds. I firmly believe in an Individual Education programme for each child, within the Special Needs sphere. Through self-discovery teaching strategies, such as projects, research topics, Internet activities, group work and the like, each child can reach their optimum potential.
